Help for Cortex — AI Focus Timer on iPhone. If the answer you need isn't below, write to us and we'll get back to you.
Contact us
We answer in English. To help us reproduce the problem, please include:
- your iPhone model and iOS version;
- the Cortex version (Settings → About in the app);
- what you did, what you expected, and what happened instead.
Please don't send passwords, payment card numbers or Apple Account credentials — we never need them.
For anything about a purchase — a refund, a charge you don't recognise, a subscription you want to cancel — Apple handles it directly and faster than we can: reportaproblem.apple.com.
Subscriptions and billing
How do I cancel my subscription?
Cortex Premium is an auto-renewing subscription billed by Apple, so it is managed in your Apple Account rather than inside the app. On your iPhone open Settings → tap your name at the top → Subscriptions, select Cortex and tap Cancel Subscription. You can also manage it from apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions.
Apple's own step-by-step guide, including Mac and Windows: If you want to cancel a subscription from Apple. Cancelling stops the next renewal; Premium stays available until the end of the period you already paid for.
How do I get a refund?
Purchases go through the App Store, so refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com with the Apple Account you used for the purchase.
I paid, but Premium is locked. How do I restore my purchase?
In the app open Settings → SUBSCRIPTION and tap RESTORE on the subscription screen. Make sure you're signed in with the same Apple Account you bought the subscription with — a different account has no purchase to restore. If the restore still doesn't unlock Premium, email us and mention the date of purchase.
Sounds and playback
Sound doesn't play when I lock the screen or switch apps
Cortex is allowed to keep playing audio in the background, so a locked screen or another app on top shouldn't stop it. If it does, check:
- the ring/silent switch (or Action Button) on the side of the iPhone, and the volume level;
- a Focus mode or Do Not Disturb schedule that silences media;
- another app that took over audio playback — pause it and start the session again;
- Low Power Mode, which can make iOS more aggressive about suspending apps.
A premium sound won't start or stays at 0%
The app ships with a small set of sounds built in; the rest of the premium library is downloaded once, on demand, and then kept on the device for offline use. The first play of a new sound therefore needs a working internet connection. If a download stalls, switch between Wi-Fi and cellular, make sure Low Data Mode isn't on for that network, and start the sound again.
Apple Health
What does Cortex read from Apple Health, and can I turn it off?
With your permission, Cortex reads heart rate variability, resting heart rate and sleep data to estimate recovery and adapt session recommendations. It only reads — Cortex never writes anything into Apple Health. Those readings, and the recovery score and session length computed from them, stay on the iPhone: no Health value and nothing derived from one goes into an analytics event or a crash report. Section 7.2 of the Privacy Policy spells this out, including one residual case on installations upgraded from an older version of the app.
You can review or revoke that access at any time on the iPhone: Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Cortex. Everything else in the app keeps working without Health access.
Your data
Where is my data stored, and how do I delete it?
Sessions, statistics and settings are stored locally on your iPhone. Cortex has no server-side user account, so deleting the app from the device removes that local data with it — uninstalling is the only way to clear everything. To clear part of it without uninstalling, open Settings in the app and use LOG OUT — it resets your settings and wipes session history, but it leaves achievements, goals, custom presets, subscription state and the Apple Health readings the app copied. Downloaded sounds are removed separately with CLEAR SOUND CACHE. Note that deleting the app does not cancel an active subscription — cancel it in your Apple Account first (see above).
Cortex also sends anonymous product-analytics and crash-diagnostics events. They carry no health data and no journal text. You can switch the analytics off yourself in the app: Settings → PRIVACY & SAFETY → USAGE ANALYTICS. It takes effect immediately and is remembered; from that moment nothing goes to the analytics services. Crash reports are not covered by that switch — uninstalling is what stops those. Because the events carry no identifier we can match to a person, we usually cannot find and delete the ones already sent, and we would rather say so than promise otherwise. What is collected, why, and what you can do about it is described in the Privacy Policy.
Languages
Which languages does the app support?
The interface is available in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Chinese. Cortex follows your iPhone's language setting.
